OUR IMAGE OF GOD, Pt. 2

From time to time we sing the song, “What a Mighty God We Serve.” And we do indeed
serve a mighty God! The song goes on to share “...angels bow before Him, heaven and earth
adore Him…” I continue to be amazed at how God’s creation reminds me day after day of God’s
power. As David shepherded his sheep at night, he, too, was amazed at God’s creation and
penned the words, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring
the work of His hands” (Ps. 19:1).
But then, I have to stop and consider if perhaps my life has become so busy with work,
family and leisure that I have actually limited the power of God. It is easy to be reminded of
God’s might when we stop and acknowledge Him, but is it possible that we really have put God
in a box that limits His power to only a few hours a week?
The Israelites had done just that, in spite of what they knew of God and actually having
witnessed His power over invading armies. Jeremiah warned the people that God demanded
much more of them than just an occasional worship. They came to rely on the temple of the Lord
as their devotion to God, but the Lord warned them that their ways and deeds must be amended
before Him (Jeremiah 7:1-11). Even after hundreds of years, the Jews still gloried in the temple,
but Jesus made clear that as great as the temple may have been, that it would one day be torn
down (Mark 13:1-2), and then what?
We do serve a mighty God! He works in our lives in many different ways, if we allow Him.
That may sound as if we are limiting His power, but He has given us the ability to reason and
then to choose what we do with our lives. We can praise Him one day and then by our actions
choose to betray Him (James 3:9-12) by our actions through the rest of the week. Our public
worship to the Lord each week is vital for our spiritual welfare, but just like the Israelites so long
ago, it can become our only “commitment” to God.
I am thankful that we are resuming our Sunday worship together and Wednesday Bible
classes. I am thankful that we do serve a mighty God! May our daily lives reflect God’s power,
lovingkindness and mercy. May we be revitalized in the work the Lord has given for us to do —
preaching and teaching the lost of the saving grace of our God, offered through the blood
sacrifice of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! ~P. Mowrer
